Maybe it's just because I'm kinda bad at fighting games in general but when playing with my buddy it didn't seem like there were any issues. Unless it runs slower or something, which if that were the case, I didn't notice.
Oh well, in any case I'll try that out.

It's not that ingame netplay COMPLETELY terrible (at least, judged with less of a fighting game player's mindset - to us hardcore players anything over 0f delay feels unplayable lol), it's that the caster is simply better. At the same delay setting it'll run smoother (lag spikes happen less frequently or not at all), and for most players it can successfully run with lower delay than the built in netplay will give you.
For example, trying both with a friend in St. Louis, ingame netplay is automatically set to delay 4 or delay 5 when we start, seemingly at random. Regardless of the setting, we'll get frequent (sometimes nonstop) lag spikes of the variety even someone less sensitive to minute timing would be bothered by. Caster gives us a delay of 3 consistently, with completely smooth gameplay at all times. With another friend, 4 delay drops to 2; though neither suffers lag spikes frequently enough to notice, it's literally half the delay which is always an improvement.
Caster is also still being actively worked on, so various improvements and additional features are on the way, such as the ability to spectate matches.

Netplay has always been laggy, even on Act Cadenza. Using roll attacks is difficult online for that reason, but it's still fun.
