There's already a guide for Julius here in the main section. it covers most of the stuff for him, but there's a few cool things about J.
Okay, I'm not going to pretend I know everything about the game. I've only played it for about 60 hours or so. I've used Julius a lot as my second main character, after Shanoa.
Key Tricks
Crazy hit box: Whenever Julius attacks, he also seems to hit a section slightly behind and above him as well. This can come in handy in a couple of places. For example, you can use it to keep hitting puppet master, while attacking the mannequin he puts in the iron maiden. In some directions, it seems to be the entire whip that is the hit box. Give it a try, and you'll quickly get used to manipulating it.
8-Way Whip: Pressing the whip on the floor with an upwards direction will whip it that way. Absolutely ace for hitting targets above you, or dealing damage to a boss faster. Whipping with the direction is faster than jumping each attack, so learn to use it. Heck, it's one of the only unique things Julius does.
In midair, you can whip in any direction. I've also spotted that if you whip downwards as you land it negates the attack, seen as he can't hold it while stood still. Give it a try. You can use it to hit a ground enemy and keep running, which can let you speed up. It's difficult, but can be worth it when you're trying to keep up with Valmanways running ahead.
You can also hold the direction and the attack to flail in that direction. Handy when attacking things like Death's Scythes, which dissapear in one hit.
Swing Whip: I haven't seen many people use Julius, so I can't say how many people know about it.
This video shows a couple of examples of Julius being able to climb Magnes Points.
By whipping straight up at a point, but only tapping RB, you can use it to lift yourself up, and gain height.
Main places you can use this are covered in the video, but include:
Chapter 1: Hitting the switch to get to the bottom of the tower: Don't bother with the water switch, swing over the gap!
Chapter 3: You can use it to cross the gaps where the giant hammer is, as well as to climb up to the retractable platform if Menace is out of the way. Easy access to head damage.
Chapter 4: You can use it to scale the massive tower in the top left of the map. Take it easy, and there's nice loot at the top if you're playing for fun.
Chapter 5: If you start in the higher spawn point on the right, climbing the side of the castle is easy, and can give you access to the right door to Death, as well as being able to jump kick off the enemies for the purple chest and Caviar(?) above that room.
Chapter 7: If you're really good, you can use it to scale the sides of the pyramid easily, avoiding all the boulders.
Chapter 9: Use it for access to the shortcut portrait, as well as a couple of chests elsewhere.
So far, I can't use it to climb the magnets on Chapter 11 on the right, but I'll keep practicing lol.
Another trick you can use this for is to rapidly use RB to swing downwards at a magnet. This will let you dodge floor attacks, like Death swooping along, Menace's Kick/ Punch attacks when you're on the retractable platform. Doing this also makes the crazy hit box go right behind Julius, so if you're showing off, it's worth considering
Martial Arts: Only two!
Uppercut: v ^ Y
This is a little worse than the other Whippers, seen as the hit box is actually Julius' hand. While this means that hitting someone at the maximum height of the uppercut shouldn't hurt Julius, it also means you can only really use it on things above you. It works best against flying enemies in my opinion. Learn to count how many hits it takes to kill an enemy, and roughly how much life they have, and use it to finish them off.
Omnia Vanitas: > < v > Y or < > v < Y
Using this teleports you forward, makes you invincible, and looks cool to boot. If you learn to use it right, you can use it against all sorts of area attacks. Using it against Astarte's Temptation should mean you can always ignore the attack, and I find it to be an easy way to dodge R.Count's fireball pinwheels in his second form.
You can also use O.V to dodge fire traps built in the level. Use it in Chapter 2 to get the purple chest in the middle of the map easily, or use it in Chapter 5 to dodge fire traps in the lift on the right, or on the left of the map where the Roast Beef is inside the trap. Easy chests when you're by yourself, or extra loot for everyone in a party.
Also worth of note is using it against Final Guard. It gives you more than enough length to teleport behind them, and use the whip flail to dodge ping him to death for 1's. You only have to dodge the flame wave every now and then, and if your party can only deal 1's against it, it really speeds it up.
Equipment:
Okay, so there's no way I have all the best gear. Still, it's worth pointing out some cool stuff for Julius.
Simon's Gear: Always worth it. Massive amounts of attack with the whip, and fairly huge HP. You find the items on the later DLC, but Simon's plate is easy to get from Hellmont on chapter 11 with a bit of luck.
Sub Weapon Damage: If you're gearing Julius up to have massive INT, you can never go wrong with Brilliant Mail /Death's Robe.
Cross/ Staurolite: In case you only really use Cross as an offensive power, using two Staurolite boosts the damage more than INT gear in the accessories section. I might be wrong, but so far I haven't found anything that beats it.
So, I might end up adding to this, but in the mean time, I hope it's useful Catch you online, where I can read you like a book. Or something like that.
