I haven't really gotten too into watching anime in the past several years, but i can suggest Hellgirl.
Berserk is awesome, but it ends abruptly (not a bad ending, just leaves you wanting more) and if you want more, you have to read the manga.

Hellsing is awesome, pretty much the same story as berserk though, it ends abruptly.

you might be into vampire princess miyu, it's old, but it's dark and the main character isn't afraid to kill humans or vampires.

High School of the dead is my current favorite

Shingetsutan Tsukihime is another favorite, Kara No Kyoukai is like an alternate universe for a female character with the same power as the character from Shingetsutan (I liked this one a lot)

I've seen Hellgirl on IFC last year. Very good, but I haven't been able to catch the second season anywhere.

Highschool of the Dead was good too. If not a little.... ridiculous with the fan service. >_>

I'd say probably my favorite anime so far is Clannad. Made me cry, bro. Made me cry.

I don't think anime really has a lot of notable dark stuff; at least they're not the ones talked about, especially now.

Besides what was already mentioned, I can only think of Perfect Blue, Gantz, Tokko, and Death Note. I guess you can throw Akira in there too, though I'd read that if possible. And +1 for Berserk; the animation is rather minimal, but it gets the point across.

don't watch the Gantz anime.
it's just terrible.
the beginning is good, starts off normal.
but after that I'm just sitting there with a "wtf" face the entire time, its stupid <_<

Berserk anime was good, just short. and it's music was awesome (the song Harvest by Opeth reminds me of it)

Perfect blue was good, Death Note was...meh, my ex-fiance forced me to read that one.

It's advertising we're trying to avoid, you can make a thread however that says "here check this out i think it's cool" as long as you're not taking advantage of it, You should know if it's appropriate or not.

It's a toss up between the original, MS Igloo, and G Gundam. Amuro and Char's rivalry is still my favorite. I really liked MS Igloo's battles, even though it gives you the idea that all Federation soldiers are either assholes or hellbent on revenge. And G Gundam, despite its strange premise, was just plain fun, and had some nice drama to boot. It also gave us Master Asia.
