Having recently obtained BOTH the Valmanway and The Claimh Solais, I'm a bit curious as to which people Think are the better of the two.
Reason I'm posting hear is because I'm thinking of Grinding for the +1 versions of them *and the Mura+1* and I've been having Decent Success*with a team* with 11 hard with dual Vals but 10 Hard rips me a new one...

My honest opinion, as a former Soma player, is that the Claimh Solais is overall a better weapon. While the Valmanway is popular, it is also useless against some bosses. Meanwhile, the Claimh has two things I love, high raw damage per hit, and an overhead swing. Additionally it has a special move that does a lot of damage, and covers a large area.

Claimh is better on Ch. 10 because the enemies in that level "flinch", i.e., after getting hit with an attack they're immune to that same attack from you for a little moment, thus the effectiveness of the Valmanway is turned down.
Overall though, I would say the Val has much much more utility and power in comparison to the Claimh. However, it is Soma's second best weapon (third best is Muramasa), and worth grinding.

I find the Claimh more fun to play on pretty much any level, but there's a bit of a learning curve. This is basically my strategy:
Start with vals + succubus on anything you don't know patterns for and can't dodge effectively, and use them to heal while using bullet souls for damage.
As you get better at patterns and less dependent on the succubus healing, trade in the Claimh and work your timing on the slower swing/special.
Eventually you'll be swinging the stylish sword everywhere! Bridging the gap is made easier by the fact that the Claimh has a natural int bonus, so if you're used to using bullet souls to do damage (which I was when I was using the vals), they continue to be very effective while you're learning when to pull out the sword and when to move.

Truthfully, I'm starting to find the Val to be, honestly, kinda lame when I'm not speedruning hard 2/4/5/6 as Soma *or using RAGGGGGEEE*. reason being is that I've been getting better with BDCing; So, my one handed sword selection has been sliding towards the Muras(both normal and the +1 versions). So, for Soma, The Val feels less like his "best weapon" and more like "scrub weapon".
Honestly, I don't mind using the Vals with Alucard*who, IMO, doesn't have much to work with ANYWAYS* but with Soma, it feels like overkill.

Valmanway is objectively better in most situations and with the right gear. Claimh gives a very different style, one of commitment to weapon swings and big, single hits. Try both.
Truth be told, HoD is not so difficult, so demanding that you need to flawlessly optimize. If you like the feel of a weapon, if you find it fun, use it. Back it up with the gear you need to make it work (aka, 2 Miser Rings lol), but use it and have fun.
