I'm not sure I really understand your post. Are you saying that I should only post music that nobody's heard of before?
Also, whatever, dude, of Montreal is the best.
edit: not literally the best, but you know what I mean.

No, you can post whatever you like, and I wasn't trying to be a jerk, your posts just came off like no one had ever heard these bands... or that's how I read it... Anyways... every other Elephant 6 band is still better than Of Montreal... when I saw of montreal live, The Minders opened for them and put them to shame... But if you aren't familiar with other E6 bands I highly suggest you acquaint yourself with them, especially Olivia Tremor Control, The Gerbils, and the one everyone knows (you probably included) Neutral Milk Hotel... So, the outback commercials never turned you off hunh?

If it sounded like I was saying nobody has heard of these bands I've been posting about, then I apologize. That wasn't my intention in the slightest -- I was just posting some of the stuff I found myself listening to in the past few weeks. I saw oM live only once, with Janelle Monae opening. If I had to be 100% honest, I did prefer Monae's performance over Barnes', but I think, generally speaking, I prefer Barnes' extravagance and flamboyancy. As for other E6 bands, I have tried listening to a bit of Olivia Tremor Control, but for whatever reason I never really got into them. I dunno, I'll try listening to them again and see if I get into it. Never heard anything from The Gerbils actually, I'll look them up. And yes, NMH is amazing. As for the commercials, I mean, I dunno. I don't really mind it too much I guess?? I mean, generally speaking, "selling out" doesn't really annoy me, I think, because if I were in the same position, I'm sure I'd have sold out too. (edit: I mean, as long as the songs aren't being used for something horrible like racism and stuff like that. If the songs are being used for something relatively harmless, or even something positive, I'm generally okay with it.) (Although the commercial really did fuck that song up really badly and I think it's dumb.)

I can't stand oM or NMH.
of Montreal I just listened to way too much. Got sick of their style, and a lot of their songs just came off as a lot of mediocre filler songs to put on the album with a few really amazing ones, like Heimadalsgate Like a Promethean Curse. I still love that song, but a lot of them just come of as dull. They're like Queens of the Stone Age for me because I can only really stand their singles.
And Neutral Milk Hotel. Not only are they extremely overrated among everyone who wants to be a hipster, they're just really dull all together.
But that's just like, my opinion, man.

I love Olivia Tremor Control... which everyone tells me is weird because I'm not a Beatles fan at all... but to truly appreciate them, you really have to understand the process they take recording their albums... The gerbils basically became Neutral Milk hotel when Jeff asked them to be his back up band... they put out 1 album before Neutral Milk Hotel and one after, plus their drummer is the brother of your beloved, and one of the best non metal drummers ever... I don't like when bands music is used for commercials, but I think that one was a major offense, total compromise of artistic integrity letting them change your words... and,l really more than anything... I was just trying to stir conversation on this thread... cuz there should be more I can't stand oM or NMH. of Montreal I just listened to way too much. I feel the same way you do about of montreal. As for NMH... As a writer (or poet or whatever) Jeff Mangum's lyrics are some of the most beautiful this world has ever seen... Song Against Sex, Oh Comely, & Two Headed Boy part 2 are all so beautiful that I can't hear them without choking up... man, hipster has such a different connotation now then when I was younger... and most contemporary hipsters I've come across don't know anything about music, so if they do listen to NMH, then that's probably their best aspect.

I can understand how a lot of oM's songs can be considered "filler" but I'm actually kind of surprised you used Hissing Fauna as an example. I actually thought every track on Hissing Fauna was very good, except maybe Sink the Seine. I can definitely understand how you feel about filler on, like, False Priest or Sunlandic Twins, though. Different strokes I suppose. Also: don't like NMH??? Has the whole world gone crazy?! Am I the only one around here who gives a shit about the NMH?!

I'm not familiar with the bands you guys are discussing, so I will take this opportunity to educate myself about them. I love expanding my music collection. What albums from oM/NMH/whoever else would you guys recommend?

Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea Olivia Tremor Control - Black Foliage The Gerbils - The Battle Of Electricity The Apples In Stereo - New Magnetic Wonder those should be a good E6 intro. I was just trying to stir conversation on this thread... cuz there should be more I'm listening to whatever I can find from The Gerbils on youtube atm. So far, I really like Crayon Box and Sunshine Soul. Are You Underwater is really nice and chill. Gonna keep lookin'. Olivia Tremor Control is still, I dunno. A lot of it is very Beatles-esque, which is really nice, but I'm not sure I'm really in the proper "mood" for it right now. I can definitely see why the song made a lot of people upset -- it sounds really awful in the commercials. I'd prefer if they didn't do it, too. But I can always pretend it never happened I'm not familiar with the bands you guys are discussing, so I will take this opportunity to educate myself about them. I love expanding my music collection. What albums from oM/NMH/whoever else would you guys recommend? From oM, I'd probably recommend either The Gay Parade, or Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer? They're both amazing albums, but for different reasons. The Gay Parade is very Beatles-esque, kind of in a similar vein as Sgt. Pepper. On the other hand, Hissing Fauna basically details the horrible aftermath of a troubled relationship using incredibly catchy tunes. Honestly, Hissing Fauna fits more into my set of personal preferences, so I'm going to link you to something off that album instead: www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBYGjC_hJ9AThe lyrics in some of NMH's songs, as previously mentioned by postmodernmartr, are incredibly powerful, evocative stuff. This is one of my personal favorites: www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKGN1EDei7wedit: it sounds a bit odd out of context from the rest of the album, though, especially the very beginning. I'd recommend listening to the entirety of In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.

Call me crazy but I’ve never been much of a lyrics guy. Although lately I’ve been paying more attention to them, just really I find it difficult to listen to something no matter what the lyrics are if the music itself is just uninteresting to me. That’s how I felt with The Antlers too when I listened to Hospice. I'm not familiar with the bands you guys are discussing, so I will take this opportunity to educate myself about them. I love expanding my music collection. What albums from oM/NMH/whoever else would you guys recommend? I’ll just post some songs/artists I’ve been listening to a lot recently. Hope you all like it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzEUeWnV73Uwww.youtube.com/watch?v=umeZtszNShkwww.youtube.com/watch?v=M9wHYiicY5Iwww.youtube.com/watch?v=vAu0WxaYFroThe post was ginormous with the youtube videos. Just switched them to the urls.
